The Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter/The Shelter Connection
The Shelter Connection is the volunteer organization at The Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter. This organization supplies professionally trained volunteers as adoption advisors and dog handlers, level 1 to 4 (walkers and socializers to training assistants). We hope to better the quality of the dogs' lives by increasing adoptions through training and socialization of the dogs and public education. Secondary missions of the organization are:
- To educate adopters in breed choices and responsible care of dogs

NORTH SHORE ANIMAL LEAGUE AMERICA
North Shore Animal League America, located at 25 Davis Avenue in Port Washington, is the worlds largest animal adoption organization. Founded in 1944, the League is a pioneer in the no-kill shelter movement and has found loving homes for more than 800,000 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. In addition, the League has many programs that benefit pets as well as people. Seniors for Seniors helps unite senior pets with senior citizens for the benefit of both. Animal lovers can virtually adopt a pet through the Sponsor A Pet Program that supports dogs and cats who, for medical or social reasons will live out their years in the safety of the Leagues adoption center. These programs are just an example of the love and compassion that NSAL America has for homeless pets.
Within the last months, North Shore Animal League America truly demonstrated the motto: Saving Pets is our Passion. As hurricanes battered the Gulf coast of the United States, the League mobilized its Emergency Response Team to assist with the rescue, care and relocation of displaced and homeless animals in the region. Setting up a staging area with the Humane Society of Louisiana in Tylertown, MS, NSAL America has brought nearly 1000 dogs and cats to the shelter in Port Washington and reunited countless pets with their original owners. Rescue work in the region will continue as long as there are animals who need help.
