Pet Safe Coalition is an all-volunteer, non-profit corporation working to mitigate loss of human and animal life in the event of disasters that require evacuation.
Our primary objective is to help people develop their own plans to evacuate their pets. To do that, Pet Safe provides an informational program including brochures, safety tips, maps showing vulnerable regions of Nassau County, family safety checklist, and a children’s coloring book with checklist, as well as speaker-presentations targeted to address the specific needs of individual communities.
Pet Safe has conducted hundreds of presentations throughout the Greater New York Metropolitan area, including presentations by invitation to the Nassau County Legislature. Pet Safe has also distributed tens of thousands of pieces of informational literature at pet shows, animal hospitals, Legislators’ storm conferences, and presentations at schools, senior centers, and civic organizations.
Our Supplemental objective is to provide temporary, emergency sheltering of Nassau residents’ pets in the onslaught of an imminent disaster such as a dangerous environmental condition, industrial accident, or terrorist incident. To do that, Pet Safe works in a coordinated way with local veterinarians, managers of the public and private shelters in Nassau County, and emergency management officials of local governments throughout Nassau County.
All Pet Safe operations follow protocols of the National Incident Management System. Pet Safe’s Emergency animal-sheltering Operations Plan follows the protocols of the Incident Command System. These plans are designed to serve a limited number of residents whose own pet-evacuation arrangements fall through. The plans are continually being updated as needed and subjected to rigorous standards to assure efficacy in times of disaster.
